The badge was worn by members of the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service (AAMWS), was established in 1942, replacing the Voluntary Aid Detachment that had carried out nursing and Red Cross duties. The AAMWS served in Australia, New Guinea, Borneo, Singapore, and Japan.

The women serving with the AAMWS worked as nursing and dental orderlies in blood banks, radiology, and pathology. They also performed office and postal work, and army education and laundry services.
